Bombproof Casement
This bombproof casement is located inside the earthworks of the east wall of the fort. You can see the arched vaulted ceiling that would be extremely strong and a good defense against artillery shells lobbed into the fort from ships in the Delaware or from the land.

These casements were built as quarters for troops or for storage of ammunition. This casement of one of the three larger ones at the fort and has an oven and tables and benches and was presumably used dining. Druing the Civil War, the fort was used as a prison and this casement would have been fitted out with double decker bunk beds to house prisoners.
