Here's how we ended up having lunch at Kid Shelleen's in Wilmington just north of Trolley Square. I was surfing on the Web and ended up on the site for Harry's Hospitality Group where I saw the a graphic link to Kid Shelleen's. Since I was probably the last person in the valley to find out that Harry owned the place, and not having been there for lunch or brunch in easily 8 or 9 years I thought it was about time. It would be interesting to see what changes Harry had made to the place.
Walking in to the Charcoal House and Saloon it took about 10 seconds to see that not much had changed from the earlier days except the bank of booths nearest the bar had been replaced by a long, high table with two rows of chairs. The same atmospheric cowboy art was on the walls, same everything. It was familiar, comfortable and noisy. I ordered a Southwestern Chicken salad (right) with organic romaine, crispy fried chicken tenders, the usual suspects and something new...jicama. Susan ordered Jumbo Shrimp Fajitas. Both were well prepared and presented. The jicama was diced, had a texture like bamboo and a very subtle fresh taste. I liked it and the salad.
So, bottom line, Shelleen's hasn't changed a lick. Still a great local watering hole if you can find a seat at the bar, a solid comfort food menu and free parking in the lot across the street.
